The Old Granary @ WICKENTREE FARM

The property dating in parts from 1711 and earlier times, is set within the Delamere Forest, Vale Royal area of Cheshire, which has long been regarded as some of the most scenic in the county, much favoured by tourists, visitors and home buyers wishing to view, walk and live in Delamere, an area of prestigious outstanding natural beauty, yet extremely accessible to Chester, Manchester, Liverpool and the airports, including all the commercial centres of the North West via the motorway links.

The clearing at Wicken Tree was one of the first to be formed in this area of ancient Delamere Forest, although the recent road sign denotes Hatchmere, it is actually part of Norley.

Wickentree Farm is in Blakemere Lane.

Delamere Forest stretched from Liverpool to Wolverhampton and was used originally as royal hunting grounds, the Done family in particular ruled as their head foresters for approximately 300 years alone.

Within this area of Norley there were cheese rolling contests held on Cheese Hill.  The gallows being on an adjacent mound, now known as Gallows Clough Lane.  If you were caught poaching, the royal head forester would have hung you there.  Adjacent there is Gads Bank, being a derivative of Gods Bank where poachers prayed just prior to hanging, there were many.

For an early period an evil monk ruled the area from the ancient Vale Royal Abbey, he on holding a function or at whim would raid the local farms for livestock and produce.  He was eventually taken to London and executed by King Edward for his atrocities.  Where he lived within the Abbey was demolished and some of the old stones from the Abbey can be seen within the structure of Wicken Tree buildings.

Wickentree is strategically placed to start your visit to Cheshire and the forest, with its own splendid setting and direct access in, the tonic air quality being second to none.  All the accommodation is set back off the roads to give safety to children, walkers and horse riders alike, being within 14 acres of  scenic views.  In the setting itself is incorporated a wild life pond, ideal for relaxation, complete with a forest backdrop.

Close by, in an exceptionally pretty area of the forest, there is Delamere Golf Club, where with prior arrangement through Wicken Tree, any golfing party who wish to play at the Golf Club can take the advantage of a 10% discount off green fees.  Additionally, bookings for dinner parties can be made. The private membership course is one of the finest heathland inland venues, and is exceptionally dry even after horrendous storms, making an ideal course to play off - this again making Wicken Tree an outstanding location for any golfing package breaks.

Also locally, there are horse riding, windsurfing, mountain bike hire facilities, and the well-known Sandstone Trail.  Wicken Tree is approximately 11 miles from the ancient walled city of Chester and 6 miles from the historic market town of Frodsham.

The farm is surrounded by 2000 acres of these ancient woodland walks. A pub and Chinese Restaurant are two or three minutes walk away, also Hatchmere lake. In our opinion, the locality is a walkers, cyclists come mountain bikers paradise. Delamere railway station is half a mile away with a cafe, on the Manchester - Chester line, also within the next village, there is a good motor museum.
